How to make money from a podcast
On this page
The main ways to make money from a podcast are sponsorships and ads, YouTube ad revenue from a video version, listener support (memberships, Patreon, paid subscriptions), premium or bonus episodes, affiliate links, your own products or courses, services the show sells for you, and live events. Small shows usually earn most from their own products and services; big shows from sponsors and ads.
1. Sponsorships and ads
Brands pay to reach your listeners, usually per episode or based on downloads (a cost per thousand, or CPM). Rates vary widely by niche and audience; a show with a small but specific audience (say, B2B software buyers) can command far more per listener than a general one.
You need: consistent downloads, a clear audience description, and a simple media kit.
2. YouTube ad revenue
A video podcast on YouTube can join the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Long episodes build watch hours quickly once people are watching. Clips as Shorts help reach the threshold and bring new viewers to full episodes. See YouTube Shorts monetization.
You need: a video version of the show, and clips to promote it.
3. Listener support
Memberships through Patreon, YouTube channel memberships, Apple Podcasts subscriptions or Spotify's options, where available. Fans pay for bonus content, early access, ad-free episodes or community.
You need: a loyal core audience; even a few hundred committed listeners can add up.
4. Premium episodes
Put part of your content behind a subscription: bonus interviews, deep dives, archives.
5. Affiliate links
Recommend tools and products you use, with an affiliate link in the show notes. Works best when it's natural to the topic.
6. Your own products
Courses, templates, books, merch. The podcast builds trust; the product captures it. Often the biggest earner for small, focused shows.
7. Services
For consultants, coaches, agencies and freelancers, the podcast is the sales engine. One client can be worth more than a year of ad revenue. See ClipFlame for coaches.
8. Live events
Live recordings, workshops and meetups for your audience.
Grow first: every model needs reach
All eight depend on more people finding the show. The biggest lever for most podcasts today is short clips: 30 to 60-second moments on Shorts, Reels and TikTok that send new listeners to full episodes. See how to make podcast clips that get watched.
ClipFlame cuts each episode into captioned clips and schedules them to four platforms, for $19 to $39 a month. See the podcast clip maker.
Common questions
How many listeners do you need to make money from a podcast?
For sponsors, usually a few thousand downloads per episode. For your own products or services, far fewer. A few hundred of the right listeners can be enough.
Do podcasts make money on Spotify?
Spotify runs monetisation programmes for some creators in some countries. Check Spotify for Creators for current terms.
Is YouTube good for podcasts?
Yes. It's one of the biggest places people watch podcasts, it pays through the Partner Program, and clips as Shorts help new people find you.
