How long can YouTube Shorts be?
On this page
YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes (180 seconds) long. Any video uploaded after October 15, 2024 that is 3 minutes or shorter and has a vertical (9:16) or square (1:1) aspect ratio is treated as a Short. Before that date the limit was 60 seconds. There is no official minimum length.
That's the rule. How long your Shorts should be is a different question, and the answer is usually "a lot less than three minutes." More on that below.
The YouTube Shorts length rules at a glance
| Rule | What YouTube says |
|---|---|
| Maximum length | 3 minutes |
| Applies to | Videos uploaded after October 15, 2024 (standard channels) |
| Aspect ratio | Vertical or square. A 16:9 video under 3 minutes stays a regular video |

| Official Artist Channels | The 3-minute rule applies to uploads after December 8, 2025 |

Why a 2-minute video may not be a Short

The most common confusion: someone uploads a 2-minute video and it lands in the regular Videos tab instead of Shorts. The reason is almost always the aspect ratio. YouTube uses shape as well as length. If your video is 16:9, it stays a long-form video no matter how short it is.
The other case is an old upload. A 90-second vertical video you posted in early 2024 is still a regular video, because the three-minute rule isn't applied to uploads from before October 15, 2024.
Music and Content ID limits on longer Shorts
Longer Shorts come with two catches, both around copyrighted content:
- Music from the Shorts library. YouTube says most songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a Short, and some tracks are limited to 30 or 60 seconds.
- Content ID claims. Shorts longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim used to be blocked. From September 24, 2026, YouTube says those Shorts will no longer be blocked automatically and may stay playable.
If you're clipping your own podcast or talking-head video, neither matters much. You own the content, and you're not adding a licensed song on top of speech.
How long should a YouTube Short be?
As long as the idea needs, and no longer. For talking clips (podcasts, interviews, tutorials, commentary), that usually lands at 20 to 60 seconds.
Here's why shorter usually wins. Short-form feeds watch what viewers do with your clip: do they keep watching, rewatch, or swipe away? A 30-second clip that most people finish sends a better signal than a 2-minute clip where half the viewers leave at the 40-second mark.
So the three-minute limit isn't a target. It's room for the clips that truly need it:
- A story with a real payoff that takes 90 seconds to land.
- A short tutorial where every step matters.
- A back-and-forth debate where cutting it would lose the point.
What goes wrong: padding a clip because you can. A 45-second idea stretched to 2 minutes with a long intro is a worse clip than the 45-second version.
When ClipFlame cuts clips from a long video, it keeps them between 15 and 90 seconds, most of them 20 to 60, and every one starts and ends on a full sentence. That range came from the same reasoning: long enough for a complete thought, short enough to finish.
App vs desktop Shorts length
The 3-minute limit is the same whether you upload from the YouTube app or from YouTube Studio on desktop. What changes is convenience. The app's Shorts camera lets you record, trim and add music in one place. Desktop upload suits clips you've already edited elsewhere, such as clips cut from a long video.
Shorts length vs TikTok and Instagram Reels
If you post the same clip everywhere (and you should), the length that works on Shorts generally works on the others too. TikTok and Instagram both accept vertical videos longer than three minutes, so a clip made for Shorts will fit on those platforms without trimming. Keep one master clip at the length your idea needs and post it to all three.
Turning long videos into Shorts
If you already make long videos, you've got a backlog of Shorts sitting in them. The quickest route is to find the 20–60 second moments that make sense on their own, cut them on full sentences, reframe to 9:16 and caption them. Our step-by-step guide on turning a long video into short videos covers each step, and our podcast clips guide covers the two-speaker version.
Once they're posting, when you post and what you put on screen matter more than squeezing out the full 180 seconds.

Common questions
Can YouTube Shorts be 2 minutes long?
Yes. Since October 15, 2024, a vertical or square video up to 3 minutes long counts as a Short, so 2 minutes is well within the limit.
Can YouTube Shorts be over 3 minutes long?
No. A vertical video longer than 3 minutes is uploaded as a regular long-form video, not a Short.
Do longer Shorts get more views?
Not by themselves. Length only helps if people keep watching. A tight 30-second clip that most viewers finish usually does better than a 2-minute clip they abandon halfway.
Does a Short have to be vertical?
It has to be vertical or square. A 16:9 video stays a regular video even if it's under 3 minutes.
