Social media character counter

LimitCountLeft

Paste your text and the counter checks it against the character limit of every major platform as you type: Instagram captions (2,200), TikTok captions (2,200), YouTube titles (100) and descriptions (5,000), LinkedIn posts (3,000), X posts (280) and more. It also counts words, lines, hashtags and mentions, and warns you when a post goes over Instagram's limit of 5 hashtags.

How platforms count characters

Most platforms count what you see: one letter, one space or one emoji is one character. The counter does the same, so an emoji made of several code points, like a family or a flag, counts once.

X counts differently. Letters in most Western languages count as one, but emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two. Every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is. The two X rows in the counter use these rules.

Instagram's 5-hashtag limit

Since December 2025, Instagram allows at most 5 hashtags on a post or Reel. Hashtags in the first comment count toward the same 5. If you paste a caption with more, Instagram won't publish it, so the counter flags it in red.

The part people actually see

A limit is the most you can write, not how much people read. Feeds cut captions after the first line or two and show "…more". Put the hook in the first line and keep anything important above the cut. For long Instagram captions with paragraphs, the line break generator keeps your spacing intact. To write the caption itself, start from the caption generator, and pick tags with the hashtag generator.

Write once, post everywhere

The same clip often needs four slightly different captions. ClipFlame writes a title, caption and hashtags for each platform within that platform's limits, then posts the clip at the time you pick.

Common questions

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

2,200 characters, with about the first 125 shown before "more".

How many characters can an X post have?

280, or 25,000 with Premium. Emoji and CJK characters count as two, and every link counts as 23.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Up to 5 per post or Reel since December 2025, including hashtags in the first comment.

Does the counter count emoji correctly?

Yes. An emoji made of several code points, like a flag or a family, counts as one, the way platforms show it.
