Instagram grid maker

Choose an image and a grid size. The grid maker crops it to fit, cuts it into tiles three wide, and numbers each tile in the order to post it. Tap a tile to download it, or download them all. Post them in order, starting with Post 1, and they line up as one big picture on your profile. Nothing is uploaded: the cutting happens in your browser.

Why the posting order is backwards

Instagram puts each new post in the top-left corner of your grid and pushes the rest along. So the tile that should end up bottom-right has to go up first, and the top-left tile goes up last. The numbers on the tiles follow that order. Post 1 is the bottom-right tile.

Which tile shape to choose

Instagram's profile grid shows posts as 3:4 portrait rectangles. Pick 3:4 and each tile shows in full on the grid, so the picture lines up. Instagram accepts 3:4 posts directly.

If you choose 4:5 or 1:1, the grid trims the top and bottom or the sides of each tile. The joins between tiles may then not quite line up. Those shapes suit grids where each tile also has to work on its own in the feed.

Tips for a grid that works

  • Every tile appears alone in the feed, so followers see one ninth of a picture. Put something readable on each tile, like a face or a word.
  • Post all the tiles in one sitting. If you stop halfway, the grid looks broken until you finish.
  • Use a big source image. A 3 × 3 grid of 3:4 tiles is 3240 × 4320 pixels in total, so a small image will look soft.
  • Later posts shift the grid. Each new post moves every tile along by one. Post in multiples of three to keep the rows aligned.
