Feed posts: 1080 × 1350 (4:5) takes up the most room in the feed, and it's the safe default. Since 2025, Instagram's profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles rather than squares, so a 4:5 post loses a little at the top and bottom on your profile. If the grid matters, post 3:4 (1080 × 1440), which shows in full in both places. Square (1080 × 1080) and landscape (1080 × 566) still work but look small in the feed.
Carousels: every slide takes the shape of the first one, so make them all the same size.
Reels and Stories: 1080 × 1920. Keep text and faces out of the bottom fifth, where the caption and buttons sit, and the top 250 pixels or so, where the username is. On the grid, a Reel's cover is cropped to 3:4, so keep the important part in the middle.
Profile photo: upload at least 320 × 320. It's shown as a circle, so keep your face in the middle.
YouTube
Thumbnail: 1280 × 720 is the usual size; YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 and accepts JPG or PNG up to 50 MB from a computer (2 MB from the app). Details in YouTube thumbnail size. Thumbnails are mostly seen small on phones, so use big faces and three or four words at most. Grab an existing one with the thumbnail downloader.
Channel banner: 2560 × 1440, but only the middle 1546 × 423 shows on every device. Keep your name and any text in that strip.
Shorts: vertical 9:16, 1080 × 1920. Vertical videos up to 3 minutes count as Shorts. More in how long YouTube Shorts can be.
Videos: 16:9, 1920 × 1080 (1080p) at least. 4K (3840 × 2160) gets a higher-quality version on YouTube, even for viewers watching at 1080p.
TikTok
Video and photo posts are 1080 × 1920 (9:16). TikTok's caption, buttons and progress bar cover the bottom and right edges, so keep captions and text out of the bottom 20% and the right 15% of the frame.
Feed images look best at 1200 × 630 for links and landscape photos, or 1080 × 1350 for portrait photos, which take more of the feed on phones. The cover photo is 820 × 312 on desktop but is cropped narrower on phones, so keep text in the middle. Reels and Stories are 1080 × 1920.
Post images are 1200 × 627, or 1080 × 1080 for square images, which take more room in the feed. The profile banner is 1584 × 396, and your profile photo covers its bottom-left corner on desktop and its middle on phones. Video posts can be 16:9, 1:1 or vertical; vertical and square video take more of the mobile feed.
X, Pinterest and Threads
- X: 1600 × 900 (16:9) shows in full in the timeline. Header 1500 × 500.
- Pinterest: 2:3 pins (1000 × 1500). Taller pins get cut off in the feed.
- Threads: 4:5 (1080 × 1350), like Instagram.
One video, every size
Images are easy to resize. Video is harder, because the speaker has to stay in frame. ClipFlame turns one long landscape video into 9:16, 4:5 or 1:1 clips, follows the speaker's face as it crops, and schedules each one to the platforms it fits.
