Are AI thumbnails allowed on YouTube?

On this page

Yes. YouTube allows AI-made thumbnails. The same rules apply as for any thumbnail: it must follow the Community Guidelines, and it must not mislead viewers about what's in the video. Using AI to design a thumbnail of yourself for your own video is fine.

YouTube cares about what the thumbnail shows, not how it was made. Its thumbnails policy doesn't mention the tool at all. A thumbnail made in Photoshop, Canva or an AI tool is judged the same way.

What's fine

  • AI designs of you for your own video: a new background, a better expression, cleaner lighting.
  • AI-made scenes and objects that show what the video is about.
  • Exaggerated, stylised looks like illustration or comic styles.
  • Text and graphics added by AI tools.

What isn't

  • Misleading thumbnails. Showing something that isn't in the video, or promising a result the video doesn't deliver. YouTube can remove misleading thumbnails, and viewers who feel tricked leave early, which hurts the video anyway.
  • Anything against the Community Guidelines: sexual content, graphic violence, harassment, hate. These rules apply to thumbnails as much as to videos, and thumbnails can be age-restricted or removed.
  • Real people in fake situations. Putting a real, identifiable person into a scene that makes it look like they did or said something they didn't can break YouTube's policies on misinformation and harassment, and other people's rights.
  • Other creators' images and characters. AI doesn't change copyright: don't paste someone else's photo, artwork or logo into your thumbnail.

Do you have to disclose an AI thumbnail?

YouTube's altered or synthetic content setting is about the video: you tick it when the video has realistic content that was made or changed with AI and could be mistaken for real. There's no separate label for thumbnails. Keep the thumbnail honest about what the video contains and you won't need one.

Keep it honest and it works better

The most effective AI thumbnails are the most accurate ones: your real face, the real topic, a moment that actually happens in the video, made more striking. ClipFlame's AI thumbnail maker works that way: it designs from your own photo and screenshots of your video, so the thumbnail matches what people will watch.

Common questions

Will YouTube demonetise a video for an AI thumbnail?

Not for being AI-made. A thumbnail that breaks the advertiser-friendly guidelines (for example violent or sexual imagery) can limit ads, whatever tool made it.

Can I use AI to change my face in a thumbnail?

Yes, it's your face. Changing your expression or lighting is the same as retouching a photo.

Does YouTube detect AI thumbnails?

YouTube doesn't treat AI thumbnails differently. It reviews thumbnails against its policies, whatever made them.
