What makes a font work on a thumbnail
- Thick strokes. Thin lines vanish at 168 pixels wide.
- Condensed width. Narrow letters let you fit words bigger.
- Simple shapes. Decorative fonts are hard to read in a split second.
- Capitals for shouts, mixed case for calm. All caps reads as loud; use it when the video is.
Make text readable on any background
- Outline: a thick dark outline (about 6% of the letter height) around light text.
- Highlight box: a solid colour bar behind the words, like the yellow boxes on podcast thumbnails.
- Drop shadow: a soft shadow lifts text off a busy picture.
- Contrast: white or yellow on dark, black on bright yellow.
How many fonts?
One font per thumbnail, two at most: a heavy font for the headline and a handwritten or serif accent for a short second line. Use the same one or two across your channel so viewers recognise your videos.
Use these fonts without design software
ClipFlame's thumbnail text editor has all eight of these, plus Noto Sans Devanagari for Hindi. Make the text on an AI thumbnail editable, then pick the font, size, colour, outline, highlight and shadow, and drag it into place.
